Description
You wouldn't normally think of a turtle as an imposing
creature, but think again when you consider Testudo, the official mascot of the
University of Maryland.
Stone Mascots has created this determined terrapin for all Maryland
fans and alumni to proudly have for their very own and give good reason for
opponents to Fear the Turtle!
Testudo's history dates to 1932 when football coach H.
Curley Byrd recommended that the diamondback terrapin, a native to the Chesapeake
Bay, be named the school mascot in response to the school
newspaper's request for an "official" mascot. Although the origin of the name "Testudo" is up to debate, the scientific name for turtle is testudines.
Whatever the background on his name, our Testudo dates to Maryland's
use of the present logo in the late 1990s. We make this awesome Terp from
premium cast stone and finish him in the traditional Maryland
colors of gold, black and red. Testudo's detail is striking, from front (the "M" shield) to back (his red diamondback shell). For those who prefer a more
regal look, he is also available in vintage graystone or rich bronze. Order Testudo now and
